Flicks: Just don’t say the word “Gay”

Queer Beacon responded to my comment on his review of “The Devil wears Prada.” I just couldn’t believe that a movie about fashion with some obviously gay characters was afraid to even mention the subject–even in passing, for God’s sakes. Never a problem to make fun of the gays though, with every stereotype possible. Man, what progress.
Here is the QB post, stolen without permission:

Black Box: Will & Grace Redux

OK, so the finale sucked. I noticed that the writers for this episode were the original creators. From what I can tell they are not the regular writers. That is just to say that the writing for this episode was just awful. The last show was just a miserable failure.
That aside, I am grateful for the show. I have noticed how conveniently so many bloggers complain about this show. (See Malcontent for a sampling.) But, in the end, I know we will miss it.
Nothing has even comes close on television.

I distinctly remember back in 1998 reading in a magazine about this upcoming, groundbreaking, new show. Unfortunately, I was the real Will Truman at the time. I worked for a big NYC law firm, and there was never a Thursday night that I was home from the office before 10 p.m.
It was only when I moved to Seattle years later that I was able to enjoy the show as part of the exteneded happy hour at the Manray. I can tell you that the Gays were so happy to receive the show. Laughs were perhaps exaggerated, and I think everyone was simply glad to have 30 minutes to see some part of their lives and humor reflected. It was somehow validating.
Besides that, it was just funny.
Tunes: MTV’s Urge is the latest entrant to online music delivery

MTV’s URGE set to launch on May 17th.
From AP Business:
At launch, URGE will have more than 2 million tracks, which can be purchased individually at 99 cents or as full albums starting at around $9.95.
The service also will offer unlimited downloads at a monthly rate of $9.95, or $14.95 for the ability to transfer songs to any of more than 100 compatible portable music players.
URGE is entering a tough field, but one that needs more competition. I wonder how this will compare to current programs offered by Real, MSN and Yahoo!
I am tired of being “tied” to my iTunes and iPod. We need more flexibility as consumers to move our music from place to place and from player to player. I think we will see some antitrust examination in the next adminsitration. The French had the right idea, for once, in bringing their action against Apple’s iTunes (otherwise I am usually appalled by their attempts to regulate the Internet).Â
Nowhere else is the kind of complete ownership of a vertical market allowed in this fashion. It reminds me of the old example of the movie studios owning the actors, the production, the distribution and the movie theaters.
Black Box: We want free content!

Â

For a limited time, ABC is offering free streams of some of its hits shows. Through June 30, 2006, you can watch Desperate Housewives, Lost, Alias and Commander-in-Chief at no charge. Of course if you had TIVO you could do the same. Otherwise I think they are charging suckers $1.99 a show to download to their ipods.
Just in time for me though. I missed last week’s episode of LOST.

Tunes: Pink back with a vengeance

She’s not dead yet. Not by a long shot.
I may be lazy but I’m not dead yet either, and even I didn’t miss this beauty. Pink, with the help and juice of the Indigo Girls, bangs out a quiet, but fierce and poignant, folk tune called, “Dear Mr. President.” The theme is essentially: what would I say to George Bush, or ask him, if I had the chance. Based on the speed with which this clip is zipping around the Internet, it seems we all have some of the same issues.
Also moving to me is how Net citizens have participated by creating their own montages of images and video to the music.
Check out these You Tubers. Even Rosie, which is no surprise. Perez has the live version. Let me know about your favorites.
