Art: Os Gemeos (the Twins)

I first learned of Os Gemeos while living in Sao Paulo.  Obviously they had made it by that point; my first viewing was a painted ceiling at the ultra establishment interior design show of Casa Cor.  Their colors and figures just grab your attention and won’t let go.  I would love to see more of their work.  A little search has come up with a few resources after the jump.

Also, from Deitch Projects

Os Gemeos (pronouced “ose zhe’-mee-ose.”) are two artists from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Born in 1974, they are identical twin brothers (Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo) and their name translates to “the twins” in Portuguese. In recent years Os Gemeos have gained international notoriety for their unique works created on the streets of Sao Paulo. They also paint canvases, make sculptures, and are both graphic designers and photographers.

Q: Canadian Mounties Wed

What a country!

METEGHAN — On a Friday night in Yarmouth this June, Const. Jason Tree and Const. David Connors will don their scarlet dress uniforms, stand before family, friends and co-workers and wed in the first same-sex marriage in the RCMP’s storied history.  More.

Q: First Class Senator in a Senate full of Cowards

I recently corresponded with my Senator regarding the proposal to amend the U.S. Constititution, which would define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Q: Lipstick

Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek.  The most beautiful couple God ever imagined.  Of course, that would be too good to be true, but we are allowed to dream.  Comments?

Street: Culture Jamming

I like the idea of this so-called culture-jamming.  It has a funky ring to it and seems to take art to the street, by-passing the gallerists and the institutions (except when they are not, such as the case of Tom Sachs).  Gallerists and foundations are the Halliburtons and Enrons of the art world, base and corrupt.  Their fingers are best removed from real art and work with meaning.  In other words, real culture jamming is not taking place at Gagosian.

So even when they tag my beloved Starbucks (mmmmm… mocha), I appreciate the sentiment.

Art: Prada Toilet by Tom Sachs

With all the buzz created from the Prada Death Camp, Prada saw fit to give contemporary artist Tom Sachs an unlimited supply of Prada boxes for his latest creation, the Prada Toilet (above), according to WMMNA.

Interestingly enough, Sachs is currently showing at the Prada Foundation in Milan.

Do you think if I told them I was creating a replica of the Roman Colosseum in loafers they would send me a container shipment?

It was a little funny to see the intersection of commercial institution and critical artist.  I ultimately drew the conclusion that they were both interested in the same things: attention, acceptance, and reward (and of course, $ doesn’t hurt).

I thought it a bit ironic to include a Prada hat box as the centerpiece of a work entitled “Prada Death Camp” in a show not so subtley named “Mirroring Evil” at the Jewish Museum, then to basically ride the Prada wave with the ultimate product placement and a big time showing at the Prada Foundation.  What are we to make of the original use of the Prada hat box?  Was it specific to Prada, was Prada a symbol of industry and commerce at the time of the Holocaust, is it just a hat box and simply there for effect?  Did he forget to cover the obvious couture label in his hurry to get the piece ready?

EZ: This just in…

Porn still at the forefront of technology:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Adult entertainment giant Vivid Entertainment Group said on Wednesday it will start next month selling downloadable movies that viewers can burn to DVD and watch on their TVs.

Vivid said it will start selling burnable movies May 8 through online movie service CinemaNow, an Internet provider of on-demand movies, which had previously agreed to distribute Vivid films.

Earlier this month, CinemaNow and another online movie service, Movielink, said they will begin selling major films such as “Memoirs of a Geisha” on the same day DVDs are sold at stores in a watershed event for Hollywood in the digital age.

Just what the blogosphere needs…

another blog.  Welcome to EZculture, a new blog without a real mission.  I will be reviewing the world around me.  I will give my take on matters and works I find worthwhile.  Or I will just post lazy comments with links to things I find worth noting.  Or I may post cool images, which is easier than writing something.  In any case, we will have to see what develops.  I may get bored after this first post.  It was such a hassle.

By the way, I don’t pretend to be an expert on any of the areas I will examine, but that hasn’t stopped anyone else before.  So, don’t give my your ivory tower nonsense about the “correct” view of something.  We all know you are just copying someone else’s opinion if you approach your criticism that way.  I generally dislike critics who pretend to have the answers and attempt to enforce opinions.  Opinion is just that, subjective and individual.  Opinions are informed by who we are, our backgrounds, experiences, education, travels, loves and losses.  That way we all get to be right.
